Labeling Requirement Spain: Timeline and Scope
The labeling requirement will be effective in Spain from January 1, 2025. Packaged products that were placed on the Spanish market before January 1, 2025, can continue to be sold. However, after January 1, 2025, no products without the required labeling can be placed on the market.
So far, the requirement to label packaging and products applies only to household packaging, i.e., waste that primarily accumulates in private households. This mainly includes everyday packaging materials such as bottles, cans, and cartons.
Symbols
For the planned labeling requirement in Spain, the leading recycling system in the country has developed its own recycling symbols, which can be used license-free and at no cost. These symbols are currently available on a voluntary basis and, from January 1, 2025, will be an option for properly labeling your packaging for the Spanish market. If you are already a member of the recycling system, you can use the developed symbols. The system provides members with guidelines on how to use the symbols.
